Private Slovakia day trip · Orava Village Museum · Orava Castle · Chochołów
Cross the border into northern Slovakia for a day of mountain scenery, traditional wooden architecture and one of the country’s most dramatic castles. Spend proper time at the Museum of Orava Village, explore Orava Castle, enjoy a relaxed lunch and finish with a short stop in the historic wooden village of Chochołów on the way back to Krakow.
Two sides of the Orava region
This private day trip combines two very different experiences in northern Slovakia. At the Museum of Orava Village in Zuberec, you walk through a large open-air collection of traditional buildings and see how people in the Orava region lived and worked. Later, Orava Castle rises dramatically above Oravský Podzámok — a medieval stronghold that developed over centuries into a complex of palaces, towers, courtyards and exhibitions.
The route
The standard itinerary is designed as a relaxed full day rather than a race between attractions. You have about two hours at the open-air museum, around 1.5 hours at Orava Castle, a proper lunch break and a short stop in Chochołów before returning to Krakow. Exact times can move slightly with traffic, season and the official opening schedule of the attractions.
Your private driver collects you from your hotel or agreed address and heads south through Podhale toward the Slovak border and the Orava region.
Spend around two hours exploring one of Slovakia’s most atmospheric open-air museums. More than fifty examples of folk architecture are arranged to recreate different parts of the Orava region, with traditional wooden homes, farm buildings, workshops, a water-powered mill, craft structures and a beautiful wooden church in the mountain landscape below the Roháče range.
It is a place to walk at your own pace, look inside furnished houses and get a much better sense of traditional life in northern Slovakia than you would from a quick roadside stop.
Continue to Oravský Podzámok for the main historic highlight of the day. Orava Castle stands on a steep rock above the Orava River and is one of the best-known monuments of castle architecture in Slovakia. Its history reaches back to the 13th century, and over the centuries the original fortress grew into a large complex of towers, palaces, courtyards and defensive structures.
Allow around 1.5 hours for the castle route. Inside you encounter medieval and Renaissance spaces, historic furnishings, exhibitions, stone passages and elevated viewpoints. The castle complex contains architecture from several periods and has grown into an extensive structure with more than 150 rooms.
After the castle, take time for lunch in Oravský Podzámok or another convenient place along the route. We can choose a restaurant serving traditional Slovak food, or adapt the stop to your preferences if you would rather have something lighter, quicker or more familiar.
Back in Poland, stop for around 30 minutes in Chochołów — a highland village known for its long rows of traditional timber houses. It is a pleasant final cultural stop for a short walk and photos before the drive back to Krakow.
Relax in your private vehicle for the final journey to Krakow and door-to-door drop-off at your accommodation.

Good to know
Make the day your own
The classic route already fills a relaxed day, but because it is private we can extend it when you want more. Zakopane adds mountain-town atmosphere and free time, while the thermal baths are the most relaxing way to finish after the museum and castle.

Continue from Chochołów into Zakopane for time around the centre, Krupówki and the mountain-town atmosphere. This creates a longer day but works well if you want to combine Slovakia with Poland’s best-known Tatra resort.

After a full day of sightseeing, spend around three hours relaxing in the thermal pools before returning to Krakow. The baths sit naturally on the route through Podhale and make an especially good finish in cooler weather.
