Self-guided visit planning

How to use the Auschwitz map when visiting independently

Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau are separate parts of the Memorial, so it helps to understand the layout before you arrive. Keep the PDF on your phone or print both pages. Start with the map that matches the site you are visiting, then use the numbered points and route line as an orientation aid while following the official signs and visitor instructions on the grounds.

A self-guided visit is best suited to visitors who can understand written Polish, English or Hebrew. The information boards along the visitor route are available in these languages, so being able to read at least one of them will help you follow the historical information presented on site.

Printing tip: if you plan to carry a paper copy, we recommend using a laser printer. Laser-printed toner is generally more resistant to moisture than standard inkjet ink. In rain or high humidity, inkjet printing may smear when wet and can stain your hands or clothing.

  • Download the two-page PDF before travelling, especially if you may have limited mobile data.
  • Use the Auschwitz I page and Birkenau page separately rather than trying to treat the Memorial as one continuous site.
  • Allow time for moving between Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau when planning your day.
  • Use the map as an orientation tool; official signage, security instructions and Memorial rules always take priority.
